Programme outline

Wharfe BuildingThe Hull MBA begins with an induction programme at the start of the first semester. The modules that follow are taught in dedicated teaching accommodation in the Business School and are block taught over a two-week period. Class contact time for each module is 36 hours and involves a variety of teaching styles including lectures, group discussions and presentations. Students will also be involved in problem solving and teamworking exercises.

Taught Modules

The programme consists of 12 taught modules delivered sequentially. These are of four types.

bulletThe first module, Management and Personal Development, reintroduces students to university study and explores issues concerned with the nature of management and organisations in the contemporary business environment.
bulletThree modules, in Human Resource Management, Marketing, and Accounting and Finance for Managers ensure that students have a common grounding in the main functional areas of a business.
bulletFour modules give an integrative and strategic dimension to the study of business and encourage students to synthesise and become critically aware of wider concerns than the functional specialisms. These are Operations Management, Management Decision Making: a Systems Approach, The Business Environment, and Strategic Management.
bulletStudents then take four optional modules from a diverse and regularly updated choice that enables them to focus on particular interests by deepening and broadening understanding in a range of areas. These options reflect the research strengths of staff in the business school and enable students to customise their MBA according to their own career aspirations. A list of the optional modules currently available can be found here.

The options develop knowledge gained in the core modules by building on their content to gain a more advanced understanding, or by studying other areas of business to gain knowledge in new areas.

This allows Hull MBA students to specialise in a business area such as marketing, finance, logistics or international business, or to diversify and receive a broad grounding across a number of topic areas.

By carefully choosing the right combination of options and dissertation topic, students will enhance their core MBA study and vastly improve their value to employers.

Around fifteen optional modules are available in any year, the exact number depending on student demand. (Special note - no optional modules are available in the Gulf)

Research methods and the MBA dissertation

Two People Looking at ComputerThe Research Methods element covers research skills and methodological approaches and prepares students to undertake a substantial piece of independent work.

Students are introduced to research methods that are commonly used in business and management (for example, interviews, questionnaires, participant observation and action research) and asked to critically reflect on their strengths and weaknesses. This critical reflection provides a platform for the development of understanding about how to select and design research methods giving due consideration to the research question(s), contextual constraints and issues of ethics and validity. The course includes the preparation of a research proposal that normally links to the dissertation topic.

The length of the dissertation itself is 15,000 words and provides students with an opportunity to carry out a significant piece of research in an area of personal interest related to the world of business and management. Students are supported by a dedicated academic supervisor during the dissertation period (June-August).
